Store brought bread is sold in much bigger quantities than fresh baked bread from bakeries. One reason is because it stays fresh longer. The problem is that store bought bread that comes in plastic bags usually lacks in nutrition and can contain a lot of additives. In this project I wanted to promote people to buy freshly baked bread by making a bread box that helps storing the bread for several days.
The Bread box is made from locally produced pine tree with handles made of gute twine. Wood offers natural ventilation which is needed for the bread to not get moldy or dry. I questioned the placement of the breadbox in the kitchen. Why not have a vertical breadbox that takes up less space on the kitchen counter? The shape is based on the different shapes of bread loafs. The edgy wooden sticks helps the air to circulate around the bread. The lid has an inner part that can be lowered to adjust the amount of air circulating. And a tray in the bottom collects the crumbs.
